Last year 69 of our former French students participated in a survey about the wages earned by agency-hired and in-house designers. The seniority and diversity of the answerers mirrored our actual student population – 43 % female and 57 % male, working in numerous design fields for a more or less long time. Therefore this survey produced outcomes that faithfully reflect our young designers’ actual situation.

The average yearly wage in 2008 – all professions included – amounted to 33,000 euros, a 5,000 euro-increase compared to 2005.

Here are the details:

- 26,000 euros for a junior designer (less than 3 years of seniority),

- 36,000 euros for a senior designer,

- more than 47,000 euros for a project manager.

The location and the industrial field where the designer works have but little impact on the wage. The financial discrepancies seem to be more dependent on the area of specialization (graphic design, product design, spatial design and interaction design), on gender, to the bonuses which vary according to the company’s size (SME’s, VSB’s or big groups) and area of activity, and on objective-based bonuses.

Moreover we have been noticing a strong increase in the employment rate of our young graduates. Indeed, more than 80 % become professional designers within six month after completing their degree.

Let us also note that more than 60% of our former students are hired as in-house designers.

Our Business Strategy Department will spark off new similar surveys in the coming months so as to further and refine the first results and to keep an eye on how our young graduate’s careers evolve.
